What is a Streaming E-mail?

Streaming e-mail is a new and exciting form of streaming over the internet. You receive an e-mail which contains a programming script (usually JAVA based) which then streams images and audio into the message portion of the e-mail. In the case of video, Streaming E-mail is referred to as V-Mail.

A video e-mailed normal methods is usually fairly large in size. Video file sizes can range anywhere from 350 K (or less) to sometimes higher than 10 MB. If you were connected to your ISP at a 56K connection speed, a 5MB video file would take a long time to receive. In addition, you would be unable to do anything else in your e-mail program until you have completed receiving the file(s).

Viewers will certainly be upset receiving a 5MB video file of an unsolicited e-mail. The desire to delete or stop it is strong, but one isforced to wait to complete the download.

In V-Mail, an e-mail that is only 2K in size is received. A file of this size would be received almost instantaneously at even the slowest internet connection speeds. Upon opening the e-mail, within the body (the message section) you see a video, which is activated once you open the e-mail and begins streaming video and audio to you. If you've heard enough and don't want to see or hear anymore, simply delete it, or go to the next e-mail message and the stream will instantly stop. This is a non-invasive form of e-mail and much more welcome than the problems noted above.

What can I do with Streaming V-mail?

The possibilities are endless. Here are just a few:

Infomercials / Advertising: We're all used to receiving "junk" e-mail and its not going to stop. Most people don't read junk e-mail. By looking at the subject line and the first paragraph, they instantly decide they are trying to be sold something. So they delete it.

But now, they get a non-invasive V-Mail with an Infomercial as Video within the e-mail body itself. If they are interested, they will hang on longer. It requires less comprehension than reading an e-mail in text. Plus, they SEE and HEAR the product. Get ready, because this will be the biggest use for V-Mail in the near future.

Personal:

- Videos of the ENTIRE wedding can be V-mailed to everyone in the family

- The baby's first sounds can be streamed to dad who is offshore in the service

- An author can read some paragraphs of his latest novel and can send his/her entire fan club list via streaming e-mail.

Note: Some companies have products where an e-mail is sent with a hyperlink to a recorded video on a website. We do not consider this type of streaming "V-mail." A V-mail is where the video and/or audio is streamed in the e-mail itself.
