What is a server?

A server is a computer on a network that manages network resources. In the case of internet streaming, a server is the computer that stores images, audio and text and sends it out over the internet for the user to view. Servers are often dedicated, (no other tasks are performed other than their server tasks).

Selecting a server is similar to buying a computer for the home. The following specifications should be considered:

  • Speed (measured in MegaHertz - MHz or GigaHertz - GHz)

  • Disk Storage size (Measured in Gigabytes - GB)

  • Memory (measured in megabytes - MB or Gigabytes - GB)

  • Cache (measured in kilobytes - KB or Megabytes - MB).

  • Network Card (measured in Megabits per second - Mbps).

  • The rule is, the higher the numbers above, the better the system. Also, the higher the numbers, the more expensive it is as well. For streaming, a company should not cut corners when it comes to the servers.

A major point to remember is that some servers are specificly designed to run only one or two operating system softwares. As an example, a server manufactured by SUN can only operate with the Solaris operating system software. An IBM server is best configured with AIX (similar to UNIX) operating system software. This is important in selecting a server because the software used to generate and distribute the streaming media must be compatible with the operating system software.

What are my business options with servers for Streaming?

There are three business options to consider with streaming:

    (1) Stream from your own servers: In order to stream media effectively, excellent servers and a fast internet connection (see Bandwidth) along with the proper streaming software is required. Benefits of this is that your company has full control over the streaming content, the e-commerce, security issues, etc.

    (2) Web Hosting: Both the streaming and your entire website are handled on servers at another location. See Bandwidth for a list of web hosting services. Also this site is a good resource to compare web hosting services.

    (3) Streaming for hire: The companies listed in the Broadcast, Live Webcast and Streaming Text sections can stream a one time event or special streams your company may require.

Most server setups differ from company to company. Some companies have one server, while others have hundreds. Setting up a server requires knowing exactly what you intend to stream, the file sizes of both the applications and their required memories to run them. A well thought out system should be planned, and this usually requires an expert. This should not be accomplished "on the fly."

For the inexperienced, see the Integration and the Consultants section, which lists companies that can assist you in selecting and implementing server systems.

How much do server systems cost?

Server system prices range from as low as few Thousand US Dollars (one computer server) up to Millions of US Dollars (hundreds of computer servers). Having the best and most expensive system will not guarantee the best streaming. As an example, Victoria's Secret spent millions of Dollars on a Streaming Server System to handle thousands of simultaneous viewers. Their first live fashion webcast crashed (due to extreme popularity). A few months later, after spending hundreds of thousands of US Dollars more on upgrading the system, the server crashed during a second live fashion webcast (again, due to extreme popularity).
